Salvation Army Angel Tree is Up!

Our Angel Tree made its debut on November 23rd -- thank you to all of our patients who have already taken the time to donate.

For those who still plan to participate, simply come into the office and pick up a gift tag or call us at 734-677-2156 and we will give you a wish list item to fulfill over the phone. All donations must be at our office by December 11th at 3 pm, when we'll deliver all of the gifts to the Salvation Army.

Each gift tag on our Angel Tree represents the holiday wishes of a Washtenaw-area child or youth, such as a toy, clothes or a book. Unlike a traditional toy drive, the Angel Tree program fulfills families' and children's specific needs during the holiday season.

It's hard to believe November is almost upon us, and with that, the start of the holiday season. And it's with that in mind that we are so very thrilled to announce the start of our annualSalvation Army Food Drive (with a special prize drawing for all who contribute), as well as give a preview of our enormously-popular Salvation Army Angel Tree program that kicks off later this month.

Food Drive Begins Nov. 2nd

 

We are proud of our commitment to the community, and are excited to announce the start of our 2015 Salvation Army food drive!

 

For each item donated to the drive, donors will receive an entry into our raffle for an Oral-B Healthy Clean Floss Action electric toothbrush, valued at $159.99. 

The drive begins on Monday, November 2nd, and will end onWednesday, November 18th. The toothbrush drawing will be held on Monday, December 1st.

Angel Tree is Coming Soon!

 

When you visit our office beginning November 23rd, you will have the opportunity to select a tag from our Salvation Army Angel Tree.  Each tag represents the wishes of a real child or youth (toys, clothes, books, hats and gloves) in the greater Washtenaw area. Unlike a toy drive, the Angel Tree program fulfills families' and children's specific needs and wishes for the holiday season.

Our Angel Tree donations need to be delivered to the Salvation Army by December 11th, so all donated items must be at our office by 3 pm that day in order to meet the deadline.

Can't wait for the official Angel Tree kick off on the 23rd?  You are welcome to bring in any new, unopened toy beginning on November 6th and we'll make sure to get it matched up with a child who is sure to love it.

"Fall" for Xylitol!

Happy Fall!

October is on the horizon and so are oodles of spooky, sticky treats. Mouth Healthy Kids

 

Several years ago, the American Dental Association launchedMouthHeathy.org, a consumer-facing website focusing on oral health concerns aimed at the general public. With Halloween coming up -- and all that sticky, chewy, gooey candy on the horizon that's about to fill our kids' mouths -- we thought it would be a good time to focus on Mouth Heathy Kids -- the ADA's site for the younger set. 

 

Mouthhealthykids.org is filled with great information, presented in an engaging manner that's easy and fun to understand.  From games to worksheets and videos, there are activities for every age group to enjoy. Personally, we're considering utilizing the site as a preemptive strike against October Candy Overload Syndrome. ;)

Orthodontic Health Month

 

October is National Orthodontic Health Month.  It's so important to be sure children are seen by an orthodontist by age seven for an initial evaluation.  This consultation establishes a baseline for their orthodontic health, and allows the orthodontist to note whether there are any developmental issues in the child's mouth which should be monitored.  The earlier a child is seen, the easier it will be to take care of small problems before they become much more difficult and time consuming to treat.  Early treatment is the key to good orthodontic health!

• Open enrollment for insurance is coming up soon!  If you are aDelta Dental subscriber, and select the "Standard PPO" plan, be sure you fully understand what it covers.  Although it costs a bit less than their other plans, it can be much more expensive in the long run as it covers very little which leads to greater out-of-pocket costs.
   

• Don't forget to say "cheese!" next time you're visiting ourpractice.  As part of our digital records system, we are now keeping a photo of each patient on file as part of their records.

Dental Emergencies

 

Our office handles many types of dental emergencies, and we can often get patients in to see Dr. Kotre very quickly if we are notified of a problem.

 

Mouth injuries are common, and can be quite frightening. Injuries to the teeth, gums, and other soft tissues in the mouth often bleed copiously, even when they are not serious, leading to panic, especially in parents who have found themselves caring for a child with a mouth injury. Luckily, mouth injuries and issues are usually easily treated, often just with home care. And even those injuries requiring an emergency trip to the dentist or doctor will generally heal quickly.

We are so very excited to announce the addition of the OralID oral cancer-screening device to our practice. The OralID utilizes fluorescence technology via a blue light that allows clinicians to identify oral cancer, pre-cancer and other abnormal lesions at an early stage. Use of this new appliance enables our team to screen for issues in only 60-90 seconds -- we think that investment of time is quite small if it means potentially saving a life.

August Office Closures

The office will be completely closed on August 6th and 7th. This means there will be no phone coverage for those who have questions or wish to schedule an appointment. For our patients of record, there will be an emergency number available for urgent matters on our outgoing voicemail.

 

Back-to-School Time

 

...and that means it's time for a back-to-school contest as well!

We're asking kids ages eight and older to donate one school supply item (such as pencils, pens, markers, crayons, etc.) by bringing it into the office. Chlorine = Discoloration

April is Oral Cancer Awareness Month, and our focus is on prevention and early detection.  Therefore, we are dedicating this issue to protecting our oral health with information about mouth cancers, an offer for a FREE Trimera oral cancer screening during any scheduled appointment, and a 33% discount on mouth guards for spring sports.Read on for more information!

Facts About Oral Cancer 

 

Did you know?

 

Nearly 40,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral or pharyngeal cancer this year:

 

• It will cause over 8,000 deaths, killing roughly 1 person per hour, 24 hours per day.

• Of those 40,000 newly diagnosed individuals, only slightly more than half will be alive in 5 years (approximately 57%).

• The mortality rate for oral cancer has not significantly improved in decades.

• The death rate for oral cancer is higher than that of cancers which we hear about routinely such as cervical cancer, testicular cancer, and skin cancer.

• Worldwide, oral cancer rates are even higher, with over 640,000 new cases diagnosed each year.

• Historically, the death rate associated with oral cancer is particularly high not because it is difficult to diagnose, but because the cancer is routinely discovered late in its development, when it has already metastasized to other areas of the body, often the lymph nodes.

• Early diagnosis is the key to positive outcomes after a diagnosis of oral cancer.  Our free Trimera oral cancer screening will be available for the entire month of April during all regularly scheduled check ups.  Call today to make an appointment at 734-677-2156.

 

 

 

Oral Cancer and You

 

Who is at risk for developing oral cancer? Tobacco users are one population at much greater risk for developing oral cancer than non-users.  For example: 

 

• Cigarette, cigar, or pipe smokers are six times more likelythan nonsmokers to develop oral cancers.

• Users of dip, snuff, chewing or other smokeless tobacco products are 50 times more likely to develop cancers of the cheek, gums, and lining of the lips.

 

Other risk factors include:  

 

• Family history of cancer

• Excessive use of alcohol

• Excessive sun exposure, especially at a young age

 

The key to beating oral cancer is early detection.  Regular preventative dental appointments, at least twice a year, will go a long way towards making sure any changes or issues are identified early on.  For more information on oral cancer, you can check out these excellent resources:

New Year, New Contest!

We hope the holidays were happy for everyone who celebrated! This month, we have some some important information to share regarding insurance cards, inclement weather closings and an incredible new whitening system that will soon be available, as well as a contest to kick the new year off right.Please read on for more information...

 

 

 

Insurance Cards Required

 

For your own protection, insurance cards are now required in order to process dental claims, as well as a photo ID. Therefore, card information must be provided to our office or we cannot send claims through to be processed.  Insurance companies will no longer accept social security numbers in place of your insurance ID number for security reasons.  Please bring in your card or call us with your insurance information so we have it on file.

 

Additionally, If you are at all concerned about an upcoming appointment and unsure of what exactly is covered, please call your insurance company and have them give you the facts directly. You can always contact our office ahead of time and ask what procedures are planned and we will give you their code numbers to report to the insurance company for additional information regarding cost.

Angel Tree Was A Success!

 

A huge, heartfelt "thank you" to everyone who participated in our Salvation Army Angel Tree drive.  We were over the moon at the incredible level of participation we had, and are so very happy to have been able to continue our practice's tradition of helping to give back to the community through this very special event.

 

 

 

Inclement Weather Info

 

As Michiganders, we're all more than aware of the potential for wild winter weather.  If schools are closed, there is often the possibility that our office has closed as well.  If you have a scheduled appointment on a severe weather day, please give us a call at 734-677-2156 to be certain the office is open before driving in. We want to keep all of our patients as safe as possible by keeping them off the roads during inclement weather.
