We are now scheduling into end of January and early February for routine dental cleaning appointments. Our December schedule is booked solid, and there are only a handful of January appointments still available.
If you haven't yet scheduled your January or February cleaning, please contact our office to schedule an appointment to start the New Year off right. And if you need to get in before the end of the year, you can always contact the office to check for any last-minute cancellations or to be put on our cancellation list.
Holiday Toy and Clothing Drive for Nardin Park UMC
As we have in years past, we will again be collecting new and gently-used winter coats, clothing, hats, scarves, and gloves, as well as toys, for Detroit families in need in cooperation with Nardin Park Community Church.
Nardin Park helps the very poorest families in the City of Detroit all year long through their Community Assistance Program, but with a special emphasis on helping during the holiday season. All donations of cold-weather clothing and toys will be gratefully accepted.
The drive runs through the end of January, however, Nardin Park will be making two pick-ups, one on December 20th for pre-holiday donations, and another on January 31st for anything that comes in afterward. Please help us in this wonderful cause.

Cancellation Policy Reminder
Due to our schedule booking up quickly and limited appointments available, we will be now be enforcing our cancellation policy for appointments that are missed or cancelled without a 24-hour notice. The charge is $35 per hour and will be applied automatically to your account. Thank you for your understanding!
Holiday Hours
Our office will be closed for the holiday season from December 23rd through January 1st, 2020. We will reopen on Thursday, January 2nd, 2020.
A doctor will be on-call should you have a dental emergency that is causing pain and/or discomfort. Simply call our office and the emergency number will be available on our voicemail for patients of record.

November certainly has a lot going on! It's officially National TMJ Awareness Month, Mouth Cancer Action Month, and even has a special day to remind folks how important it is to brush regularly with National Brush Day on November 1.

Welcome, Dr. Shoukr!
Dr. Sarah Shoukr joined our practice last month and has enjoyed getting to know all of our patient family. We are so happy to have her in the office!
Dr. Sarah Shoukr is originally from Egypt where she received her Bachelor of Dentistry and Oral Surgery in 2008 from Minia University. She then came to the United States in 2011 and completed her dental training at the University of Michigan, graduating in 2018.
Dr. Sarah enjoys all aspects of dental care, from restorative to endodontics, and has a special passion for oral surgery, and sees patients from infancy to late adulthood. She is involved in local dental organizations and resides in Ann Arbor with her husband and two daughters. She will be in the office most Mondays from 7 am to 4 pm except the third Monday of each month when Dr. Diaz is in.

Cancellation Policy to be Enforced
Due to our schedule booking up quickly and limited appointments available, we will now be enforcing our cancellation policy for appointments that are missed or canceled with a 24-hour notice. Schedule Change for Dr. Nick
Dr. Nickodemus has added an 8:00 a.m. appointment slot on Wednesdays and Thursdays for any operative procedure or emergency appointment. Her schedule is now: Wednesdays and Thursdays from 8a to 5p, and Fridays from 9a to 2p.

October is National Dental Hygiene Month, an effort to celebrate the work dental hygienists do and to help raise awareness regarding the importance of good oral health.

Exciting News: Our Newest Doctor Is Now "In!"
With Dr. Nader relocating to Seattle, we are excited to announce that we have added a new provider at our office!

One-Day Office Closure
In an effort to always learn and improve, our office will be closed on Friday, October 18th as our entire staff will be at a continuing education course. Please feel free to call the office if you have any concerns. A staff member will be in to check for any voicemails and e-mails.
Dental Tips for a Happier Halloween

Time it right by eating Halloween candy (and other sugary foods) with meals or shortly after mealtime.

Stay away from sweet snacks that are also sticky, like gummy bears. Chocolate or other treats that quickly wash away are a better option for keeping teeth healthy.

Don't forget that starchy foods can cause as much damage to teeth as sugar; the key is remembering to drink plenty of water and to brush and floss adequately to remove all types of sugar from your teeth.

Annual School Supplies Drive
You can practically smell the scent of school supplies wafting through the air this time of year, which means it's almost time for back-to-school shopping!
This year, we are bringing back our very successful school supplies raffle, and asking kids to donate one school supply item, such as a package of pencils, pens, markers, or anything else that would be useful to teachers. For each donation brought into our office, your child will receive one entry into our backpack raffle. This awesome string-style sack will be packed with dental goodies, including an Oral-B Vitality electric toothbrush!
And to sweeten the deal, all collected supplies will be donated to the winner's school!

Labor Day Hours
Please note that our office will be closed on Monday, September 2nd, for Labor Day.

Children's Orthodontics
Believe it or not, when kids are around 8 years of age (between 7-9, depending on the child) is when parents should start considering an orthodontic consultation for them.
We have several amazing orthodontists in our "dental Rolodex" that are wonderful with children, and we are alway happy to refer you to one of these specialists for a full orthodontic evaluation upon request.

A Common Oral Bacteria Makes Colon Cancer More Deadly
Oral bacteria is being linked to non-oral cancers more and more frequently:
"Researchers at the Columbia University College of Dental Medicine have determined how F. nucleatum -- a common oral bacteria often implicated in tooth decay -- accelerates the growth of colon cancer. The study was published online in the journal EMBO Reports."

February is National Pet Dental Care Month
The American Veterinary Medical Association has some tips on keeping pets' teeth healthy, too.

Dr. Kotre: Mondays (7am-4pm), Tuesdays (10am-7pm), and Wednesdays (7am-4pm)
Dr. Nickodemus: Wednesdays and Thursdays (9-5pm), and Fridays (9am-2pm)
Dr. Nader: Mondays (7am-4pm), alternating Tuesday afternoons, and every Thursday (7am-3pm)
Dr. Diaz: The first Wednesday of every month (7am-4pm)

Annual Clothing & Toy Drive for Nardin Park Was a Huge Success!
Thank you to everyone who donated to our clothing and toy drive for Nardin Park UMC. This year's event was as amazing as last year's! Our patient family truly made the holidays much brighter for many Detroit families.
For those who don't know, Nardin Park assists some of the very poorest residents of the City of Detroit all year long, but with a special emphasis on the holiday season. We are so very grateful to our patient family for making this drive a huge success!

Insurance Plan Changes
It's the time of year when most of our patients' health insurance plans change. In fact, it's likely that your insurance will switch over on January 1st. If you've had a change in your insurance, at your next appointment, please bring your new card with you and present it at check-in so we can make it part of your patient record.
Additionally, this is the time to make sure you use your FSA benefits! If you had dental work recommended to you in 2018, give us a call to get scheduled to use those FSA dollars before the April deadline at 734-677-2156
