Welcome, November!

We Are Now Booking Into 2022!
At this time, November is almost completely full, and we are now scheduling into next year.
Give us a call at 734-677-2156 or click the link below to get scheduled while we still have spots available!

Use Benefits Before They Expire!

As the year draws to a close, dental benefits, along with other insurance benefits, are beginning to expire for many plans.
If you are due for an exam and cleaning, we urge you to take advantage of the dental benefits for which you have already paid. Most dental insurance policies cover semi-annual preventative dental checkups at 100%. It makes sense to not let the opportunity for better dental and overall health go to waste.
Call 734-677-2156 to schedule your appointment, or click the button above to request an appointment so we can get you in as soon as possible.

Too Much Halloween Candy?

Halloween is almost here, and while we know kids are overjoyed, many parents are already dreading figuring out what to do with all of the extra candy in the house.
If your family doesn't want to let it hang around until Thanksgiving (or later!), here are some great ideas for repurposing that over-abundance of candy that still allows for plenty of fun.
-
Use it for Christmas gingerbread houses or other holiday baking (Peanut butter cups baked into cookies? Yes, please.).
-
Give it away at work.
-
Keep it for other events, but make sure the children don’t know where it’s located.
-
Roll pieces individually twisted into a long chain of plastic wrap or cellophane. Cut off a single piece each day for each child and you have a great countdown “calendar” to Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Christmas or Kwanzaa (psst -- the photo on the right is from Etsy -- pretty cool, right?)!
-
Many charities will take candy donations, including Big Brothers, Big Sisters, Ronald McDonald House, Operation Gratitude, Any Soldier, and most food banks.
-
Having a New Year’s Eve party? How about doing a pinata for the kids? Most candy doesn’t spoil for a long, long time and leftover Halloween candy makes an excellent pinata stuffer.
With so many options, there’s really no need to waste all of the treats your children bring home. By finding alternatives to immediately eating all of that extra candy, you and your family can definitely still enjoy the holiday, while fending off tooth decay (and stomachaches) at the same time!

Don't Forget to Return Appointment Confirmation Calls
Please don't forget to return our appointment confirmation calls. At that time, we will also do your COVID pre-screening, which is required prior to your scheduled appointment.
Thank you for your patience and understanding during this challenging time!

November Office Closures
Please note that on November 5th, the office will be closed for a team-building seminar for our doctors, administrators and staff.
We will also be closed from November 24th-26th for the Thanksgiving holiday.

COVID-19 Guideline Updates

If you have been in contact with any COVID-19 positive individuals, or have been showing signs of illness in the past 10 days, rescheduling is still necessary for the safety of our staff and patient family.
Additionally, our waiting room is open, but masks are still required.

Cancellation Policy Reminder
Please note that our policy for appointments cancelled without at least a 24-hour notice will be charged a fee of $35 dollars per hour that had been allocated on our schedule for the appointment. For example, a 2-hour appointment would result in a $70 cancellation fee.
Thanks so much in advance for your understanding!

Insurance Changes? Please Let Us Know!

While many insurance policies reset benefits or make changes at the end of the year, others use a different calendar, and it's becoming more common for them to expire even as early as October.
Therefore, please let us know at check-in if you have new insurance, an insurance change, or any new contact information so we are able to bill your provider accurately.

Wishing everyone a wonderful Thanksgiving with family and friends!

Sincerely,
Dr. Shannon Norman-Kotre

It's Dental Hygiene Month!

Although not as widely known as other monthly “celebrations,” National Dental Hygiene Month is just as important. Why? Good dental hygiene is a cornerstone of overall health. Keeping your mouth healthy keeps the rest of your body healthy!
How does good dental hygiene keep you healthy?

There have been numerous studies published recently about the connection between oral health and the rest of the body:

-
Seeing your dentist regularly for exams can mean early detection of diabetes. 25.8 million people in the United States currently have a diagnosis for diabetes. It is believed that as many as 7 million have diabetes but the condition is currently undiagnosed. In 2007, 231,404 died of diabetes-related disease. The earlier it’s detected, the faster effective treatments and preventative measures can be implemented.
-
Regular dental exams can also result in the early detection of oral cancers. Close to 37,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral or pharyngeal cancer this year. It will cause over 8,000 deaths, killing roughly one person per hour, 24 hours per day. Of those 36,000 newly diagnosed individuals, only slightly more than half will be alive in 5 years (Approximately 57%).

Happy (Almost) Halloween!

Halloween is coming up! Looking for some alternatives to sweet and sticky (cavity-causing!) treats? Check out our ghoulishly good list!
1. Stickers - inexpensive, colorful, and fun (there's hardly a kid around who can resist the offer of a special sticker)
2. Halloween pencils or erasers
3. Vampire or monster teeth
4. Temporary tattoos
5. Super-bouncy rubber balls
6. Halloween rings, such as spiders or eyeballs
7. Silly Bandz, still one of the biggest trends around right now for kids
8. Glow sticks
9. Sidewalk chalk or crayons
10. Bubbles
And if you feel like you absolutely must give out something edible, try sugar-free gum, mini bags of pretzels, raisins or mini granola bars.

Hygiene Tips for Hygiene Month
-
See your dental professional twice yearly for dental exams and teeth cleaning.
-
Brush at least twice a day, for a minimum of two minutes, with fluoride-containing toothpaste. A high-quality electric toothbrush can make a big difference in how well your teeth are cleaned. If you use a manual toothbrush, it’s recommended that you brush for three minutes or more.
-
When you brush, use a soft-bristled brush, and a circular motion to clean teeth.
-
Floss daily.
-
Avoid sugary, high-acid, or high-carbohydrate foods that coat the teeth, such as sodas, sugared gum, chewy candies, fruit juices, milk, dried fruit, honey, and even many breakfast cereals. If you choose to consume these products, be sure to brush your teeth 20 minutes after consuming them (waiting 20 minutes keeps your tooth enamel from breaking down while brushing).

Wishing everyone a hauntingly happy Halloween!

SIncerely,
Dr. Shannon Norman-Kotre

Labor Day Fun Facts

-
The first celebrated US Labor Day was on Tuesday, September 5, 1882, in New York City, planned by the Central Labor Union.
-
10,000 workers marched from City Hall all the way to 42nd Street and then met with their families in Wendel’s Elm Park for a picnic, concert, and speeches.
-
Canada is said to have originated the idea of hosting a day honoring the labor movement. In 1872, they held a “Nine-Hour Movement” to show support for striking workers.
-
There is disagreement about who actually proposed Labor Day as a holiday. Some say it was Peter J. McGuire, who was the co-founder of the American Federation of Labor. Others believe that it was Matthew Maguire, a machinist.
-
Oregon was the first state to celebrate Labor Day as a legal holiday in 1887.
-
The decision to make Labor Day the first Monday of September was approved on June 28, 1894.
-
The Adamson Act was passed on September 3, 1916, to establish an eight-hour workday.

Custom Mouthguards for Only $30!
One of the easiest, most affordable ways to prevent dental injuries is by purchasing a custom mouthguard.
Normally $55, we are bringing back our popular custom mouthguard special for only $30 through the end of September.
Additionally, if you or your children are involved in a team sport, we are offering a discount program that will outfit the entire team with mouthguards at once for just $25 each.
Serious mouth trauma is painful and can be quite expensive to treat. We would love to see all children (and adults!) who play sports be properly protected from these types of injuries.
Please give us a call at 734-677-2156 for more information or to schedule an appointment for a mouthguard fitting.

New COVID-19 Guidelines

If you have an upcoming appointment and have traveled out of state, it is no longer necessary to contact us to reschedule.
However, if you have been in contact with any COVID-19 positive individuals, or have been showing signs of illness in the past 10 days, rescheduling is still necessary for the safety of our staff and patient family.

Dental Emergencies
Mouth injuries are common and can be quite frightening. Injuries to the teeth, gums, and other soft tissues in the mouth often bleed copiously, even when they are not serious, leading to panic, especially in parents who have found themselves caring for a child with a mouth injury. Luckily, mouth injuries are usually easily treated, often just with home care. And even those injuries requiring an emergency trip to the dentist or doctor will generally heal quickly.
Our office handles many types of dental emergencies, and we can often get patients in to see our doctors very quickly if we are notified of a problem.
If you experience a dental emergency, please feel free to give us a call at 734-677-2156 as soon as possible and we will do our very best to make sure you or your family member is able to be seen immediately.

Wishing everyone a fun and safe rest of your summer!

Sincerely,
Dr. Shannon Norman-Kotre

Don't Forget to Hydrate!
As the summer heats up, don't forget that your body needs extra fluids in order to function optimally.
For most people, this means drinking plenty of water. The majority of individuals do not need sports or energy drinks in order to stay properly hydrated, even when spending a lot of time outside. And your teeth will thank you for avoiding sugary, acidic beverages and opting for water instead!

Nearly 40,000 Americans will be diagnosed with oral or pharyngeal cancer this year. Early detection is the key to successful outcomes.

If you have any questions or concerns about oral cancer, please give us a call at 734-677-2156 or contact us via our website. We are happy to help!

Note From Dr. Kotre on COVID Vaccinations

"We have noticed a number of our patient family members asking if our staff is getting or has received the COVID vaccine, and whether or not we have taken the necessary steps to keep our patients safe.
"Please note that we cannot divulge personal medical information regarding who has had the vaccine, and who has not, as this would require disclosing confidential medical information, an extremely serious HIPAA violation. While our staff has had the opportunity to be vaccinated, by law, we must protect both our patients' and employees' health information.
"Thank you for your understanding!”

Insurance Pre-Determinations

If a specific treatment has been recommended to you, please feel free to stop at the front desk to have one of our staff members submit an insurance pre-determination.
If you have an upcoming appointment and you see that we have called, please be sure to call us back ASAP at 734-677-2156 for your mandatory pre-appointment COVID screening. Many patients miss our call but don't return it; however, if you are not screened prior to arrival, you cannot be seen on the day of your appointment. Thank you for your understanding as we do our best to keep everyone safe!

Children's Dental Health Month

It's that time again!
February is National Children's Dental Health Month. The American Dental Association has come up with a great campaign to help educate kids about the importance of maintaining good dental health. This includes some fun activities, including the following downloadable activity sheets -- simply click on the links below to check them out!
Insurance Plan Changes

It's that time of year when many of our patients' health insurance plans change. If you've had a change in your insurance, at your next appointment please bring your new card with you and present it at check-in so we can make it part of your patient record.

*Important*: Know Before You Go (to Your Next Appointment)
-
Dr. Kotre has added iWave to the office, an air-purifying device that reduces pathogens, allergens, and particles. iWave has been tested against COVID-19 with 100% efficacy. The system helps maintain a healthy environment without producing any harmful byproducts, in concert with the already-purchased air purifiers throughout the office.
-
Please also note that the office is cooler than normal due to the additional PPE that must be worn by our staff for your protection. We recommend bringing along a sweater if you tend to get cold. We have also removed toothbrushes from the bathroom, so please be sure to brush and floss prior to your appointment.
-
Additionally: Masks are required by anyone entering the office, and we ask that you call from the parking lot when you arrive as our waiting room is completely closed -- 734-677-2156.

-
If your child is receiving dental care, we do allow one parent or guardian to accompany them during treatment. However, we ask that siblings and other adults remain at home.
More details about our COVID-19 policies are available on our website; please feel free to contact the office with any questions.
Happy Birthday!

Happiest of birthday months to our two fabulous hygienists (who also happen to be two of our favorite people!), Kris and Lori. Best wishes for two very special days!

Treat Your Teeth Right This Valentine's Day
With Valentine's Day coming up, it will soon be time to indulge in plenty of sweet treats -- just don't forget to treat your teeth right after indulging.
Our tips? The "healthiest" candies for your teeth are those that melt quickly or wash away easily with water, such as chocolate. Anything very sticky -- in particular, gummy candies or chewy caramels -- or things that must stay in your mouth and dissolve over time and/or must be "crunched" in order to be eaten (hard candies), are generally worse for your teeth.
We hope your Valentine's Day is sweet (but not TOO sweet!)! ;)

COVID-19, Travel, & Potential Exposure

If you have an upcoming appointment and have traveled out of state, been in contact with any COVID-19 positive individuals, or have been showing signs of illness in the past 10 days, please contact the office. Your appointment will need to be rescheduled for the safety of our staff and other patients.

Please Allow Extra Time for Travel
Driving in the Ann Arbor-Ypsilanti area is always an adventure, but even more so once the snow starts to fall. With that in mind, we ask that our patients please plan to arrive at least 10 minutes before scheduled appointments, which allows us to stay on schedule when traffic delays occur due to construction or inclement weather. Thank you for your help!

Wishing all of our patient family a fabulous February and a very happy Valentine's Day!

Sincerely,
Dr. Shannon Norman-Kotre

Is there anyone out there who isn't incredibly thankful to see 2020 come to an end and a new year begin?
We are so grateful to you all for your support over the past nine months, and grateful as well to see a light at the end of the tunnel in the form of effective vaccines. Here's to a year that hopefully lets us all hug our family and friends again soon!

We are now booking into March 2021!
If you need to be seen in the first few months of the year, we encourage you to get in touch soon so we can work with your schedule. This is also a great time to use your FSA benefits before they expire!
