Be An Angel for the Holidays

 

When you visit our office from now until December 11th, you will have the opportunity to select a tag from our Salvation Army Angel Tree.  Each tag represents the wishes (toys, clothes, books, hats and gloves) of a real child or youth in the greater Washtenaw area. Unlike a toy drive, the Angel Tree program fulfills families' and children's specific needs and wishes for the holiday season. 

 

Additionally, if you are unable to make it to the office to pick up a tag, you are welcome to simply bring in any item that would be appropriate for a child aged newborn to 18 years.  We are happy to help get it to someone in need.

 

All Angel Tree donations must be delivered to the Salvation Army by December 11th, so all donated items are required to be at our office by 3 pm that day in order to meet the deadline.

Happy Almost-Fall!

 

The leaves may not yet be turning, but with kids starting back to school, we know autumn is just around the corner. 

 

Although we may not be ready for snow, many of us, including some of our staff members, are more than a little excited for the start of cooler temperatures, pumpkin patch visits and maybe even an occasional fire in the fire pit! Insurance Coverage Reminder

 

It's the time of year when we start to see insurance plans come up for renewal and our patients should begin seeing information packets in the mail or at work from their HR departments.

 

Please look carefully at the information regarding your dental coverage and If you have any questions at all about your coverage options, please give us a call at 734-677-2156.

 

Major changes in insurance from year to year are not uncommon, and we've already had patients calling the office who wished to continue with our practice, but are now finding themselves unable to do so due to their new elections. We are always happy to help explain your plan coverages before making a choice.

We have many patients who participate in team sports.  As a former high school athlete, Dr. Kotre is dedicated to preserving her patients' dental health both via education, and prevention.

 

One of the easiest, most affordable ways to prevent dental injuries is by purchasing a mouth guard.  We are able to fabricate a custom mouth guard for only $25.  The proper fit provided by a custom mouth guard can mean the difference between excellent and mediocre protection against injury.

 

In addition, if you or your children are involved in a team sport, we are offering a discount program that will outfit the entire team with mouth guards at once for just $20 each.

 

We have already seen several kids with serious mouth trauma this year. The effects are often both painful and expensive. Insurance Changes

"Unaccompanied Minors"

 

During the busy summer season, it can be easy to forget that minors cannot be seen at the practice without permission from a parent or guardian; in fact, it's illegal!  

Although we are happy that our patients trust us enough to see to their children's dental needs even without their supervision, if you cannot bring your children yourself or your child is driving to their appointment alone, you must call ahead of time or send a signed note giving us permission to treat them, or we will be unable to do so.

Believe it or not, our summer appointments are flying off the books.  June is already completely full for cleaning appointments, and the office is closed for our own summer vacation the first week of July. Therefore if you or your children are off during this time and would like to make an appointment, be sure to contact the office as soon as possible. Insurance Reminder

 

For better or for worse, insurance providers change their plans often.  Because of the constant changes, coverage of any dental work cannot be guaranteed.  We will always try our best to give our patients the most accurate information possible; however, the only way to truly guarantee the out-of-pocket costs of any dental work is to pre-determine the needed procedure with the insurer directly.  Unfortunately, Delta Dental is the only provider that allows us to pre-determine coverage immediately.  All other providers require at least 30 days via snail mail.  

If you know you will require a specific dental intervention over the coming months, and need to know exactly what your costs will be, please let us know at least 45 days in advance so we can contact the insurer on your behalf and supply you with accurate details.

Digital Dentistry  

It's hard for us to believe, but we've been a completely digital office for two months now and we are loving the results!

The instant feedback the new digital dental equipment provides has been a great help not just to Dr. Kotre and her staff, but has also proven to be an incredibly useful way of keeping our patients more informed and aware of their specific dental health issues and challenges.

Thanks again to everyone for being patient with us during this transition.  It wasn't always easy, but it looks like it was definitely worth the wait!

Don't Forgo Your H2O  

 

As the summer beings to (FINALLY!) heat up, don't forget that your body needs more fluids in order to function optimally.  For most people, this means drinking plenty of water.

 

Adequate water intake is not only important for the health of your body, but also for good oral health.  Water helps flush away bacteria in your mouth, which keeps teeth healthy, and also assists in keeping breath fresh.

 

Don't forget -- sports drinks may contain water, but for most people, they are an unnecessary source of enamel-eroding acids and sugar-loving bacteria. Ultimately, your mouth will thank you for avoiding sugary, acidic beverages and opting for water instead!

 

One tooth-saving hydration tip: While it may be tempting to flavor your water with lemon, if you plan on sipping all day, stick to drinking it without any added flavors.  Lemons and other acidic fruits, when consistently added to drinking water over time, can cause the same damage to enamel as sports drinks.

We are excited to announce the addition of CAESY to our practice.

 

Who is CAESY?

 

Well, CAESY is not so much a person as a great new learning tool we've made available for our patients while in the office. The CAESY system provides hundreds of educational multimedia presentations related to oral health, featuring 3-D animation, full-motion video and narration.

As 2014 gets underway, we are beginning to see many changes in dental insurance benefits across the board. If you have an appointment on the books, or are planning on scheduling soon, please be sure to verify your benefits for the new year if they have taken effect, or are about to become active. Unfortunately, some companies do drop certain benefits from the previous year. Even if your benefit costs have remained the same, there is still a chance the covered services have changed.
