An 11-pound dachshund and a 500-pound lion don’t at first glance seem like a recipe for friendship. But that didn’t stop these two from becoming buddies. A recently released video shows Milo (the dachshund) appearing to give Bonedigger (the lion) a very thorough teeth cleaning. Bonedigger appears happy to reciprocate, licking the dog in return with a tongue that’s roughly the size of Milo’s head. The two 5-year-olds, residents of the Garold Wayne Zoo in Wynnewood, Okla., have been friends almost from birth. Joe Schreibvogel, the zoo’s resident animal expert, first introduced his four dachshund puppies to Bonedigger when the lion was just a 4-week-old cub. “The dogs thought it was just a big puppy and have loved each other since,” Schreibvogel recently told the Today show. While all four dachshunds play with Bonedigger, Milo and his littermate Angel have become especially close to the big cat: They sleep with him, eat raw meat and even mimic the lion with high-pitched roars of their own. And don’t even try to separate them: “You do not ever try to take his dogs out of the yard,” Schreibvogel said. “[It] makes him very mad. They sleep on top of him.”
